NASA spacecraft begins first stages of historic encounter with pluto.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft launched on January 19, 2006 is set to begin its first encounter with the dwarf planet will be a historic encounter as no spacecraft before new horizons has visited pluto or a object beyond neptune, the closest approach of the planet will be made by the spacecraft on July 14, will also observe the moons of pluto, charon is the largest moon of the planet nearly half of the size of the planet.
Discoverd in 1930, Pluto was originally considered the ninth planet from the Sun.Its status as a major planet fell into question following further study of it and the outer Solar System over the next 75 years. The understanding that Pluto is only one of several large icy bodies in the outer Solar System prompted the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to formally define "planet" in 2006 . This definition excluded Pluto and reclassified it as a member of the new "dwarf planet". Pluto now is considered as a member of dwarf planet. Pluto's orbital period is 248 Earth years.
New Horizons will reveal much more about the dwarf planet pluto, as projected the spacecraft will approach the planet on july, 2015. Pluto is a small icy planet, the temperature is so cold that the expectations of presence of life on the planet is very low, almost 0%. But this planet has very much to reveal about itself as the mission past more mysteries of the icy-dwarf planet will be revealed.
